History

Since its founding in 1876, the Strobel Quarzsand quartz works has been steadily run in family hands. What began as pioneering work in Freihung developed over five generations into a modern industrial operation.

Milestones such as early industrialization around the turn of the century and the introduction of fire drying in 1960 shape the company's history.

Today, the fourth and fifth generations lead the company with around 80 qualified employees and look back on 150 years of successful raw material extraction.

Deposits & Raw Material Supply

A Deposit with 170 Million Years of History

“Freihung silica sand” was formed in the Mesozoic era as a marine coastal deposit and is today one of Germany's high-quality silica sand deposits. Its naturally high level of purity is the foundation for all Strobel Quarzsand products supplied to industrial customers worldwide.

What was arduous underground mining in the 19th century is today carried out through modern open-pit mining, in part with controlled loosening blasts. The focus remains on selective extraction: each sand layer is specifically directed to the matching product group; layers that were previously difficult to process have increasingly been utilized over the years.

Reliable Raw Material Supply Through Long-Term Partnerships

Anyone who wants to supply for the long term has to think long-term. Long-term extraction agreements and a partnership-based relationship with landowners form the reliable foundation at Strobel Quarzsand for a permanent, plannable raw material supply – for us and for our customers.
